During this month's recorded Elluminate, we focused on strategies for solving word problems.
Please note the link to the recorded session is provided on this page. You can also access the recorded session through CAVAParent. If you choose to watch the recorded session through the link provided on this page, please make sure to also log your attendance by sending the code word. This can be done by clicking on the link titled "Enter Your Attendance". Students have until the end of the month to attend the session and complete assignments.
During the session, students were given direct instruction on these strategies. Students were provided opportunities for guided and independent practice and exposure to multimedia, including application sharing of video tutorials, helpful websites, and interactive games available via the Internet. Relevant files and study guides were sent to the student through the file share option in Elluminate. You can access the files by clicking on the recorded link provided on this website. The class objectives, related standards, and OLS credit, and assignments in Study Island are listed below.
CLASS OBJECTIVES:
- Identify necessary facts in a word problem.
- Identify appropriate operations that would solve a word problem.
- Write an equation for a word problem.
- Use thinking blocks to model a problem.
RELATED STANDARDS:
7.1.3 Determine when and how to break a problem into simpler parts.
7.1.1 Analyze problems by identifying relationships, distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information, identifying missing information, sequencing and prioritizing information, and observing patterns.
OLS CREDIT:
MS Pre-Algebra Unit 8, Lesson 2 or 3
Pre-Algebra A Unit 5, Lesson 12 or 13
Math 5 Unit 9, Lesson 11
STUDY ISLAND ASSIGNMENT:
Earn a blue ribbon (score of 80% or above) in "Real World Problems" by the end of the month. This assignment can be found under "Mrs. Pillsbury's SAI Math Class" page on your Study Island home page.

How do you Write Mathematical Expressions from Word Problems?
This video will walk you through an extensive list of words to signal you to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. You may choose to make a list of these words for a poster in your learning environment or math folder.

Spy Guys: "Strategies"
This website gives six strategies for problem solving. There are audio and flash tutorials and examples for each of the six strategies. The website also contains other interactive lessons and a math glossary.
Thinking Blocks
This website has multitude of step-by-step tutorials, videos, and practice problems for solving word problems with thinking blocks. I highly recommend visiting this site a couple times a week to practice solving word problems. It gives student a visual and kinesthetic way to work with solving word problems.
